Dr. Bunsen has a problem—he stored a rack of six bottles filled with clear colorless liquids too close to a heat vent and the labels fell off of each of the bottles. He needs your help in order to correctly identify each of the solutions. Below is a list of the solutions:  Pure DI water  0.10 M AgNO3  0.20 M HCl  0.20 M HNO3  0.20 M KOH  0.50 M NaHCO3 we are provided with ph paper and phenolphthalein

Answer 1
Answer: What!  Your teacher is crazy - half of those things will catch on fire if they are mixed!  You should double check to make sure you have them written down right or you could really get hurt!

If you mix HNO3 and HCl you will get a brown gas (don't light it or smell it!).  The one that is heavier is the HNO3, because it has more atoms in it.  Then, mix the silver one (AgNO3) with KOH - it will give a silver coating to the plastic (search for Tollins Test to see what it looks like).  DI water will absorb CO2 from the air and make carbonic acid, so the one that is acidic will be the water.

Good luck!

Which statement describes a chemical property of the element magnesium?(1) Magnesium is malleable.
(2) Magnesium conducts electricity.
(3) Magnesium reacts with an acid.
(4) Magnesium has a high boiling point.

Answers

Answer: option 3) magnesioum reacts with an acid.

Justification:

1) Malleability, conduction of electricity, and boiling point are physical properties.

2) Maleability is the ability to be transformed into foil. It is just a change in form. So, it is a physical property.

3) The metals conduct electricity in virtue of the array of the atoms, which permtis the flow of the electrons, but it does not involve a chemical change, so it remains being a physical proerty.

4) Boling point is the temperature at which a substance passes from liquid state to gas state, which are just different forms of the same substance. So, it is other physical property.

5) Reaction with an acid is indeed a chemical transformation: the metal (magnessium) will form a chemical bond with some spieces of the acid to form a new compound. This is a chemical reaction in virtue of the chemcial properties of the substance (its ability to react with acids)

Magnesium reacts with an acid.

Even though water is a liquid, some insects are able to stand on its surface due to water's high surface tension. Unbalanced forces pull the water molecules inward which causes the surface of the liquid to have properties similar to that of a stretched elastic membrane. What is responsible for the unbalanced forces in water?A. ionic bonds
B. a neutral pH
C. hydrogen bonds

Answers

The answer is letter C. hydrogen bonds. Surface tension in water, which makes water form drops and causes the surface to form a curve above the mouth of a container, results from the water molecules being strongly held by H bonds to those water molecules beside and beneath them. The cohesion among water molecules and the adhesion of water to other materials like rock and soil make capillarity possible.

Which scientist developed the equation of wave mechanics?

Answers

The scientist that developed the equation of wave mechanics is Erwin Schrodinger that combined the works of Bohr and de Broglie. The electron was a three dimensional wave circling the nucleus in a whole number of wavelengths allowing the waveform to repeat itself as a stable standing wave (it can absorb energy form a nearby source which is oscillating at a proper frequency) representing the energy levels of Bohr model. He also said that Broglie’s model was correct about the matter waves and the electrons are located in the atomic space according to standing wave frequencies.

Which process represents a chemical change?(1) melting of ice(2) corrosion of copper(3) evaporation of water(4) crystallization of sugar

Answers

Answer:

Corrosion of Copper is a chemical change.

Explanation:

Copper like Iron when come in contact with moisture and oxygen oxidized and corrodes according to following equation,

                                             4 Cu  +  O₂    →   2 Cu₂O

This corrosion results in lost of conductivity, strength and luster of copper. As in this reaction two substances i.e Cu and O₂ are reacting to produce a completely new substance i.e. Cu₂O hence, it is declared as chemical change.

The process which represents a chemical change is (2) corrosion of copper.

FURTHER EXPLANATION

Matter may undergo two types of changes: physical or chemical change.

Physical change involves changes in appearance, size, and other physical properties of a substance. There is no change in the composition or identity of the substance. Examples of physical changes are changes of state and change in size.

Chemical changes are changes wherein the composition or identity of the substance is altered. The properties of the substance changes. This involves formation of a new substance due to the rearrangement of atoms. Examples of chemical change are burning and rotting.

  1. Melting of Ice is a physical change. It is only a state change from solid to liquid.
  2. Corrosion of copper is a chemical change. A new substance forms when copper is corroded and there is a change in the property of the substance. Copper is a conductor but copper oxide is not.
  3. Evaporation of water is a physical change. It is a state change from liquid to vapor.
  4. Crystallization of sugar is a physical change. The composition of sugar remains the same and no new chemical bonds are formed.
