What effect does the third-person-limited point of view have on the reader's understanding of this story?A) It allows the reader to see Jamal from the point of view of the author who autographed his book.
B) It allows the reader to witness and understand Jamal's experience of his day as a junior representative.
C) It allows the reader to see and feel the pride that Jamal's mother felt when he won the contest with his letter.
D) It allows us to learn about the way that government is structured in detail and what responsibilities representatives actually have.

Here is the Passage...
Jamal wrote an essay because he really loved the government and knew that one day he wanted a career in the US Congress. Although he put his whole heart and soul into his letter, he had no idea that his essay would win the entire national contest! He wasn’t the only winner. Forty-nine other kids across America had also won the chance to visit Washington, DC, for the eighth annual Constitution Conference.

2On the trip, Jamal’s official title was “Junior Representative.” The kids who got to visit the nation’s capital had a very big day in store. The goal of the day was to teach kids the fundamentals of civil service. The organizers had planned a whole day of activities designed to help kids get an idea of how it would be to work in the different branches of government.

3First, all of the kids gathered in a large room made to look like the House floor. There, Jamal and the other winners said the Pledge of Allegiance and learned about the history of the Pledge. Several speakers went to the front of the room and made announcements. Then all of the kids watched and listened as the speakers debated. Some kids, who thought the day would be less educational, said the debate was monotonous. Jamal, however, enjoyed this exchange of words mostly because one day he wanted to be a great debater. To him, this was one of the best moments of the day.

Another fine show was when several new Americans reenacted their Pledge for Citizenship. Seeing how sincere those people were as they spoke made Jamal realize how lucky he was to be born in the United States.

Which statement best expresses the central idea of the excerpt?Generals were able to send secret messages to each other using a mask.
General Howe failed to help the other generals defeat the Americans.
The British were better at using codes than the Americans.
False information in a letter could cause problems for the Americans.

Answers

The central idea is that false information in a letter could lead to problems for the Americans, highlighting the critical role of accurate communication in wartime strategies. Here option D is correct.

The excerpt likely discusses how during the AmericanRevolutionary War, generals used various methods to communicate and coordinate their actions, possibly including the use of codes or secret messages.

The mention of "sending secret messages" suggests that the focus is on the potential for miscommunication or deception among the American forces. False information or misinterpretation of messages could lead to problems, such as failed strategies or military setbacks.

While the passage might touch on other topics, such as General Howe's role or the comparative skills of the British and American forces in using codes, these elements seem to be secondary to the broader theme of the consequences of misleading or inaccurate communication during wartime, making option D the most appropriate choice as the central idea.

Complete question:

Which statement best expresses the central idea of the excerpt?

A - Generals were able to send secret messages to each other using a mask.

B - General Howe failed to help the other generals defeat the Americans.

C - The British were better at using codes than the Americans.

D - False information in a letter could cause problems for the Americans.
