In “The Exercise,” Bernard MacLaverty contrasts two ideas of fatherhood—one that is loving and one that is cold and strict. The lines that best reflect the theme of the strict father figure are the following:
"You could have made a better job of it yourself. Other hand." The same ritual of raising and lowering the left hand with the tip of the cane to the desired height. "After all, I have taught you some Latin." Crack. "It would be hard to do any worse."

In the short story Condensed Milk, the motivations for the protagonist's actions are hunger and revenge.
It should be highlighted that the protagonist is unwell and malnourished after being sent as a prisoner to a Gulag. He would only attempt to flee if there was condensed milk involved.
The protagonist and narrator, a prisoner of hard labor in a Soviet gulag, are at odds with Shestakov, another prisoner who has been assigned a more comfortable position. Shestakov proposes an escape route, which the main character surmises is designed to fail.
Once he receives a couple of cans and drinks their contents, the protagonist the said he is not going to escape after all. It should be noted that at this point, his motivation is revenge.
