Body of a sample e-mail: The public library is essential to our community. Students need a safe and quiet place to complete their homework. However, the city council plans to cut the library’s hours. This will limit students’ time to study and conduct research after school. I am writing to urge you to vote against these cuts. If the budget is an issue, perhaps volunteers from the local community college can help staff the library. Use the body of the sample e-mail to a city official to answer the questions. What is the viewpoint? What is the problem? What is an effect of the problem? What is the proposed solution?

Answers

  • What is the viewpoint?

The person who wrote this email believes that the local library should be a priority: "the public library is essential to our community." This person cares about the town's students' ability to study in an appropriate environment: "students need a safe and quiet place to complete their homework." They would like the library to remain available as it currently is.

  • What is the problem?

The problem is the city council's recent decision to reduce the opening hours for the library: "city council plans to cut the library’s hours." We are told that this measure comes as a response to the charges that are involved in keeping the library open (paying the employees, for the most part): "the budget is an issue."

  • What is an effect of the problem?

This is an issue because as a consequence, the students would not get to study in as good conditions as they do now: "this will limit students’ time to study and conduct research after school." As a result, the community can try to influence the vote of the city council's members on the issue: "I am writing to urge you to vote against these cuts."

  • What is the proposed solution?

The solution suggested to the city official is to ask college students to volonteer as library employees, in order to keep the library open without the city council's worrying about paying the staff: "perhaps volunteers from the local community college can help staff the library."

The problems that salva had to face in a long walk to water

Answers

Salva is a young Dinka boy who lives in South Sudan in 1985. There is a civil war between South and North Sudan. South Sudan is primarily Christian and North Sudan is primarily Muslim. North and South Sudan are at war because the South Sudanese people do not want to change their religion from Christianity to Islam.  This story is about Salva's journey from South Sudan as he flees the Sudanese army and ends up in America. One day Salva is at school and is told to run away because the Sudanese army is coming. He first ends up in a rebel camp where the fleeing men are forced to join the rebel army. Salva is a child so he continues on his journey. He faces starvation,  thirst, marauding rebels, he crosses a desert, wild animals such as lion, his shoes and clothes wear out so he has to walk barefoot across the desert, he is chased out of Ethiopia and ends up walking towards a refugee camp in Kenya.

There are many events in our lives that involve rituals: birthdays, wedding anniversaries, Christmas, Hanukkah. When we take part in those rituals, we remember the past and look to the future. The theater often shows rituals being celebrated onstage. Discuss how the Hanukkah celebration contrasts with the harsh reality outside the hiding place. What is the mood of this Hanukkah scene?

Answers

The hanukkah celebration is warm and close-knit and cozy, while the reality is that they're hiding in a building where the Gestapo could barge in at any time. This contrast is shown when it mentions a car passing by in the background and a dog persistently barking, both of which foreshadow imminent danger. In the annex, people are exchanging gifts--and warm feelings, in sharp contrast with the cold, merciless Gestapo.
