Dominant and recessive alleles of a gene play a role in deciding the phenotype of the particular gene or trait.
The terms dominant and recessive are used in association with allele to express which allele has been expressed.
A trait has two alleles that help to decide its expression. The alleles can be either both same or dissimilar. When both alleles are same, it is called homozygous condition, where it can be homozygous dominant/recessive. When one allele is dominant and other is recessive, it is called as heterozygous dominant.
Dominant allele is that which is expressed whether in homozygous or heterozygous condition, whereas recessive allele is that allele whose expression is masked if it is present with a dominant allele in heterozygous condition. The recessive allele is only expressed when both the alleles are recessive, that is in case of homozygous recessive.
