Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) is a X linked recessive disorder. In this disorder, fatty acid beta oxidation occurring in peroxisomes is impaired which leads to the accumulation of long chain fatty acid in cells.
The disease is caused by mutation in gene ABCD1 which codes for peroxisomal membrane transporter. This transporter transports the long chain fatty acids inside peroxisome for degradation hence problem with it interferes with the degradation process leading to build up of fatty acids inside cells.
The main damage is caused to the myelin sheath of the nerves which leads to hyperactivity and seizures. Other symptoms are speaking and listening problems, muscle stiffness, sexual dysfunction etc.
