Keep track by tallying every time you hear a derogatory remark and logging them in appropriate categories. Keep this to yourself, and do not speak of this to any of your friends.
Mentally note the most ridiculous comment that you heard someone say about someone else or some other group. Do not record any of the comments that you find highly offensive. Use only G-rated language for this project.
After the two days are up, write an essay of at least 500 words about your experience tracking this socially unacceptable behavior.
Be sure to include the answers to the following questions:
How do you think you would feel if you heard people saying some of the things that you heard people say about others, about you?
How did it make you feel to hear these derogatory marks? Were any of them about your friends?
Are you guilty of making derogatory remarks about people? (If so, do not include specifics, answer this question only in a general way.)
Do you think that your newfound awareness of this problem will help you to think before making derogatory remarks in the future?
What do you think can be done to eliminate this problem within your school?
