After Civil War and Union victory (1865), Republicans gave blacks the right to vote. Also approved a law saying no southerner could vote if had taken part in the rebellion against the Union.
Reconstruction changed the United States when Congress passed three important amendments to the Constitution, during this period. Thirteenth Amendment ended slavery. Fourteenth Amendment said all persons born or naturalized in the USA were citizens, and also no state could limit the rights of these citizens. And Fifteenth Amendment said no citizen could be prevented from voting because of his color. These laws alone, did not succeed in doing this. Southerners created movements to combat these laws, and the rights of black people. It took a while to make these rights a reality.
