which civilization created a powerful empire in the Andes?

  • The Inca Empire was a vast empire that thrived in South America's Andean region from the early 15th century A.D. until its conquest by the Spanish in the 1530s. Even after the conquest, Inca leaders resisted the Spaniards until 1572, when their last city, Vilcabamba, was taken.

  • Without the wheel, powerful draft animals, iron working, currency, or even what we would consider a writing system, the Incas built their empire, known as Tawantinsuyu or the "Land of the Four Corners." The empire spanned from modern-day Argentina to southern Columbia and was divided into four "suyu" that intersected in Cuzco, the capital.
