Why are the letter (from Bud's dad, to Bud's mom) and the calendar important to Bud
Bud does not find his father. The man he had believed to be his father, Herman E. Calloway, turns out, in fact, to be his grandfather.
When Herman finds out that Bud's mother was named Angela Janet Caldwell, he is inconsolable. Angela Janet was his daughter, whom he had loved very, very much. Herman, however, always had very high expectations of himself and everyone around him, and he was especially hard on his daughter, because he knew that "this is a hard world, especially for a Negro woman...she's got to be ready". Herman was determined that Angela Janet "was going to be the first Calloway to get schooling all the way through college so he thought he had to be strict on her, but he went overboard". He wanted the world for her, but "it was his dream, not hers...he never gave her time to pick it for herself". Angela Janet finally couldn't take her father's intractableness anymore, and ran off with one of the drummers in her father's band. This man, who never appears nor is named in the narrative, apparently is Bud's father.

Subject: Illegal felling of trees in our locality
Dear Sir:
I am writing to your esteemed self to express my deep concern over the problem of illegal felling of trees of in our locality. I am deeply anguished and concerned at this recklessness. There are already just a few trees left in residential colonies. How should we make the people and the Government to understand that trees are the oxygen generators for us!? We can’t survive without them. The temperature is rising alarmingly in cities.
The people must give environment the top priority even while constructing any building, settlement, township, or city. The pristine green belt left sparsely must not be touched at all. These green spaces are the unique purifiers. So they must be maintained and preserved at any cost.
I appeal to the Environment Ministry and Forest Department to look into the matter and implement stricter laws to preserve forests and green belts in our state. Thanking you.
Trees can’t be allowed to be felled in the name of new constructions! I appeal to people and the Government to preserve the few trees that are left among human colonies. It must be done at any cost. Kindly publish my letter in your reputed daily.
Yours truly,
