"A Day in the Country" narrates the story of Terenty. A homeless middle-aged man who earns a living by being a cobbler. He encounters Fyokla, a six-year-old beggar girl who asks him for help in aiding her cousin Danilka in getting her hand out of a hole in a tree.

Terenty decides to help the children, as they reminded him of himself when he was at a young age. He probably thought that aid would have come handy during that time an this is why he engages in generous efforts to help homeless children.

Terenty helped the orphans because of the fact they were orphans, they didn't have any other family or a place to go. He was a fatherly figure to them, who took them in, took care of them, loved them as his own children, educated them, and raised them.

Terenty is the character from “A Day in the Country” written by Anton Pavlovich Chekhov which describe the relationship  between two orphans, Fyokla and Danilka and Terenty, who is the homeless cobbler of village. The orphans lovingly called him Uncle Terenty and he perform the responsibility of father figure, guide, guardian, helper, assistant and trustworthy companion in their gloomy life. Although, they are related, the two orphans treat Terenty as their father and he treats them as his own children.  

Terenty helped the two orphans as they are shelter less and have nowhere to go. It was him who held, cared, fed, and attended them. They wanted someone in their life to depend on in moments of difficulties and Terenty completed this goal in their life. Terenty was all they have. It was him who cared, loved and nurtured them just like a father does for his children. He was their father, helper, and their trusted companion.

Terenty performed all these responsibilities for these orphans as he felt sympathy for their life and he could see the way they fought to live. The children also lay their complete faith in Terenty and trusted their lives to him.
