I need help! Will Gogol ever accept his name? (The Namesake) and Why?

Answers

Answer 1
Answer: Alright so I never actually read the book so please take this with a grain of salt. From what I have just read it seems that Gogol comes to accept his non-American side and appreciate his Indian-American identity. I'm not sure why he comes to terms with it, but apparently he does. In the ending he sits down and reads the book his dad gives him by Nikolai Gogol. So yes, I think he does accept his name. However I strongly encourage you to verify that if you have the book. I hope this helped :)

Franny wanted to go to Spain; _____, she could not afford the exorbitant plane ticket.

Answers

Franny wanted to go to Spain; however, she could not afford the exorbitant plane ticket.

The word that best fills in the blank is "however". In this sentence, "however" is a connector since it is joining two simple sentences: "Franny wanted to go to Spain" and "She could not afford the exorbitand plane ticket". Moreover, this connector is used to emphasize the contrast between the ideas presented in the two clauses. When "however" is added between two sentences, it is preceded by a semicolon and it is followed by a comma.

The word you could use is "However." If that's what the question you're asking is.

Answers

Metaphors are a direct comparison.
Similes use like or as to compare.
Personification gives human characteristics to animals (and other objects).
Zoomorphism would be the same as personification but the other way round.
And I have no idea what you call a historical reference other than a source, or a date, or some kind of monarch. Just checked on the internet and it might be something called 'allusion'. Not sure though.

Answer:

(B) is a direct comparison

Which sentence contains a dangling modifier? a. Upon taking the field, the player was hit by a foul ball.
b. When operating heavy machinery, one must use caution.
c. Upon bestowing the awards, the mayor congratulated all the participants.
d. Upon hearing the fire engines, the apartment building was evacuated.

Answers

D contains a dangling modifier, 'upon hearing the fire engines', because it should modify the people who were evacuated, but since it is so improperly placed in this sentence, it wrongly refers to 'the apartment'.
