Why is it in French it's called the "perfect" tense and "imperfect" tense?

Answers

Answer 1
Answer: My teacher always described the difference by talking about a camera. If the film was still rolling , eg I was eating when... Then it is the imperfect. If it is a photo that has been taken, ie the action has ended then it is the perfect, eg I ate a cake - I am not still eating it, the action has ended.
Hope that helps a bit!
Answer 2
Answer: In french there are many varying past tenses. Two of them that I have learned are the imperfect and passe compose. The imperfect distingushes in english went to the store and was going to the store. One discribes the journey to the store and one only tells you that you arrived and were physically at the store. The imperfect is a discription or a periode of time. hope this helps

Can anyone translate this into French for my friend? I don't take French and she needs help. "Anne is a 16 year old, English speaking, girl who lives in New York. She has a brother, sister, mom and dad but is upset because she thinks her family has problems. Her parents yell at her and her brother and sister won’t help her when Anne looses something. She is also upset because her friends shop at places like Calvin Klein and she shops at Walmart. One day her French teacher gives her the opportunity to go live in Belgium for 3 months with a family. She talks it over with her dad and he agrees to let her go. Over the time Anne is in Belgium, she learns to look at her life in a different light and realizes she has a very normal family."
