Athens was an empire with its alliance included most of the coastal states around the eastern and southern shores of the Aegean Sea, as well as the island around that area. Historically, the Peloponnesian War was divided into three phases. The first phase was when Sparta launched continuously invasion off Attica. On the other hand, Athens took benefits from its marine sovereignty to raid the coast of the Peloponnese. The second phase was when Athens sent an enormous expeditionary force to attack Syracuse while Sparta got support from the Achaemenid Empire. The third phase was when Corinth and Thebes requested Athens to be destroyed and its citizens to be enslaved but Sparta refused.  

Peloponnesian War happened for years and followed by a series of war. In 394-386 BC, Corinthian War happened as the following war after the Peloponnesian War. These wars shaped the ancient Greek world.
