The Salt March was an act of civil disobedience organized to protest against the Britisih colonial rule, and more precisely against the British Salt Act of 1882. This law prohibited Indians from collecting or selling salt. In turn, they were required to buy salt from the British rulers, who, holding the monopoly over the manufacturing and selling of salt, they taxed it heavily.
Ghandi used the Salt March as a way to articulate a unified theme for mass civil disobedience.
