c. Slavery first began in Africa in the 1500s and then spread to other parts of the world in what became known as the Middle Passage.
d. During the 1500s, African slave traders began to sell slaves for the Americas rather than for Muslim lands to the north and east.
The correct descriptions of the African slave trade in the 1500s are b) The Portuguese and Spanish sought African slaves for their colonies and d) African slave traders sold slaves for the Americas instead of Muslim lands.
The historical aspects of the African slave trade in the 1500s can be complex. Statements b and d correctly describe this historical event. The Portuguese and Spanish were indeed the first Europeans who began to seek African slaves for their colonies, this was mainly to provide labour in the new world (b). In the same period, African slave traders started to sell slaves for the Americas as opposed to Muslim lands to the north and east (d). Contrary to statement c, slavery as an institution had been in existence in Africa long before the 1500s, and the Middle Passage language more specifically refers to the horrendous sea journey slaves had to endure from Africa to the Americas. Statement a is incorrect, as there were indeed many African tribes who were involved in the sale of others into slavery.
