The Berlin Wall, pronounced was a fortified concrete wall that encircled and divided West Berlin from East German territory from 1961 to 1989. It also served to split Berlin physically and ideologically.
On August 13, 1961, the German Democratic Republic (GDR, East Germany), began building the wall. East Berlin and the rest of surrounding East Germany were sealed off from West Berlin by the Wall.
A broad section (later referred to as the "death strip") was also part of the barrier and comprised anti-vehicle trenches, beds of nails, and other defenses.
