Answer 2
Answer: Richard Nixon struggled with the challenge of bringing American soldiers home from the war in Vietnam. By the time Nixon was elected in 1968, America had already been involved with Vietnamese affairs since the 1950's. President Lyndon B. Johnson first sent combat troops over to Vietnam in 1965 and when Nixon was elected over half of America did not agree with the war effort anymore. Nixon faced great opposition from the public when his strategies for pulling out troops remained elusive. His popularity enraged thousands more when he issued the Christmas bombings and the invasion of Cambodia. Plus, Americans were feeling more distrust in the government especially since they found out that the Nixon administration had been keeping information from them such as the My Lai Massacre and the Pentagon Papers which said America's involvement in Vietnam was certain even though Johnson had promised to stay out of the conflict.

Nixon also had a difficult time when news of his involvement in the Watergate scandal arose after the 1972 presidential election. Nixon was projected to win the election, but he had reporters break in to the Watergate hotel to spy during the Democratic convention that had been scheduled there. After refusing to release tapes from the time, Nixon was going to be impeached but decided to resign in 1974.

The Elkins Act imposed heavy fines on railroads that gave reimbursements, which had been stated as illegal. The Hepburn Act was an act that regulated the maximum railroad rates and this ultimately ended the free passes to loyal customers. Therefore, the Elkins Act and the Hepburn Act regulated railroads in a sort of financial way.

Final answer:

The Elkins Act and Hepburn Act were essential laws in US history that regulated railroads. The Elkins Act prohibited discriminatory practices by stopping railroad companies from giving discounts to specific shippers and the Hepburn Act gave the Interstate Commerce Commission more power to regulate freight prices.

Explanation:

The Elkins Act and the Hepburn Act were pivotal pieces of legislation in American history aimed at regulating the operations of railroads. The Elkins Act, enacted in 1903, prohibited railroad companies from giving discounts to favored shippers, in this way, it helped to combat discriminatory practices. On the other hand, the Hepburn Act, enacted in 1906, gave the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) more authority to set and limit freight rates, thereby curbing excessive pricing and monopoly within the railroad industry.
