Other Americans didn’t appreciate the help they received from Japanese Americans. There was hostility towards Japanese Americans in WW2 because a lot of them were perceived to be potential spies. Evidence of this maltreatment is shown in the letter when both the waitress and the policemen did not want to help the boys simply because they were Japanese and they made this feeling known in a hostile and rude way. There was a massive labour shortage in the US in WW2 because many men had gone off to fight the war. When War broke out, many Japanese were interned in camps around the US and whilst there, they supplemented the need for labor in the US. They harvested crops and constructed infrastructure and even repaired roads and rail lines. All these were important to the US war effort as well as the domestic economy and this was what the boys in the letter was referring to when he said they came to help with the labor shortage. From the reaction of the Policeman, he knew this to be the case and yet was rude to them originally. The shows that the Japanese were working hard and yet were not appreciated.
