How Things Work

By Gary Soto

Today it's going to cost us twenty dollars
To live. Five for a softball. Four for a book,
A handful of ones for coffee and two sweet rolls,
Bus fare, rosin for your mother's violin.
We're completing our task. The tip I left
For the waitress filters down
Like rain, wetting the new roots of a child
Perhaps, a belligerent cat that won't let go
Of a balled sock until there's chicken to eat.
As far as I can tell, daughter, it works like this:
You buy bread from a grocery, a bag of apples
From a fruit stand, and what coins
Are passed on helps others buy pencils, glue,
Tickets to a movie in which laughter
Is thrown into their faces.
If we buy goldfish, someone tries on a hat.
If we buy crayons, someone walks home with a broom.
A tip. a small purchase here and there,
And things just keep going. I guess.

Answer: I understand that this poem is about money, it is about how this person is about giving. This person wants to be cheap, but also give to other people in the process. The way he talked about the stuff they needed it sounded like he was talking to someone, maybe his son or daughter, teaching them about giving. Hope this helped!

Read the following passage from The Hound of the Baskervilles, by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. As the old man stood there he saw something coming across the moor, something which terrified him so that he lost his wits…There was the long, gloomy tunnel down which he fled. And from what? A sheep-dog of the moor? Or a spectral hound, black, silent, and monstrous? Was there a human agency in the matter? Did the pale, watchful Barrymore know more than he cared to say? The Legend of Sleepy Hollowby Washington Irving (excerpt)

"Spare the rod and spoil the child."—Ichabod Crane’s scholars certainly were not spoiled.
I would not have it imagined, however, that he was one of those cruel potentates of the school, who joy in the smart of their subjects; on the contrary, he administered justice with discrimination rather than severity; taking the burden off the backs of the weak, and laying it on those of the strong. Your mere puny stripling, that winced at the least flourish of the rod, was passed by with indulgence; but the claims of justice were satisfied by inflicting a double portion on some little, tough, wrong-headed, broad-skirted Dutch urchin, who sulked and swelled and grew dogged and sullen beneath the birch. All this he called "doing his duty by their parents;" and he never inflicted a chastisement without following it by the assurance, so consolatory to the smarting urchin, that "he would remember it, and thank him for it the longest day he had to live."

What important fact about Ichabod Crane comes to light in the passage?

A. Ichabod was a just teacher who treated his students impartially.
B. Ichabod was a good teacher who tried to do right by his students.
C. Ichabod was a fair teacher who was misunderstood by his students.
D. Ichabod was an unjust teacher who punished his students with prejudice.

The correct answer is D. Ichabod was an unjust teacher who punished his students with prejudice.

Explanation:

In the excerpt presented, the narrator describes the behavior and actions of Ichabod Crane as a teacher mainly from a negative point of view, the narrator shows Ichabod is rather unjust and likes to punish his students based on discrimination and prejudice, this is shown in "he administered justice with discrimination rather than severity" that proves Ichabod punish students based on personal ideas, also, this can be seen in "the claims of justice were satisfied by inflicting a double portion on some little, tough, wrong-headed, broad-skirted Dutch urchin" that describes Ichabod enjoys punishing students but only students with certain traits are punished. According to this, the fact about Ichabod this passage reveals is that "Ichabod was an unjust teacher who punished his students with prejudice".

Honestly D. You can see that its talking about prejudice.
