Robert Fulton was a well-known engineer and inventor, who developed the first commercial steamboat. He was the son of an Irish farmer and was born in Pennsylvania in 1765. As a child, Fulton was interested in experimenting with tools and machines. Whenever he could find time, he would play with tools, and that is how he earned the nickname "Quicksilver Bob." It is believed that he built a hand-driven paddle wheel boat when he was young.
At the age of 18, Fulton moved to Philadelphia, where he made a living as an artist. After receiving a lukewarm response for his art, Fulton decided he wanted to focus on engineering and invention. Later, Fulton traveled to Paris and tried to focus on harnessing steam power.
In Paris, Fulton had a chance to meet the American ambassador to France, Robert R. Livingston, who was interested in Fulton's idea of building a steamboat. He formed a partnership with Fulton to provide the assets he needed to build this ship. A year later, they presented a prototype steamboat. In another five years, in the summer of 1807, they launched the first steam-powered ship on a journey up the Hudson River.
