Why was the founder species of finches on the Galápagos Islands able to form such a large variation of beak types?

Answers

Answer 1
Answer: Through natural selection it happened over many generations and it was gradual, not a sudden change in the founder species. One bird was randomly born with a fatter beak and so could eat a seed that was harder to crack, this meant he lived longer than the other birds or was fitter, so bred more and so more of the offspring had this slightly larger beak. This continued and the birds moved to the islands with their ideal seed and kept getting fatter beaks etc until they were no longer the same species (this is when they can't breed to produce fertile offspring).

Free palmitate is activated to its coenzyme A derivative (palmitoyl-CoA) in the cytosol before it can be oxidized in the mitochondrion. If palmitate and [14C]coenzyme A are added to a liver homogenate, palmitoyl-CoA isolated from the cytosolic fraction is radioactive, but that isolated from the mitochondrial fraction is not. Explain.

A woman who has blood type A positive has a daughter who is type O positive and a son who is type B negative. Rh positive is a trait that shows simple dominance over Rh negative and is designated by the alleles R and r, respectively. A third gene for the MN blood group has codominant alleles M and N. Which of the following is a possible partial genotype for the son?
A) IBIB
B) IBIA
C) ii
D) IBi
E) IAIA

Answers

The answer is D) IBi

A mother has either AA or AO genotype. Since her daughter has OO genotype, the one O allele is from a father and one is from the mother.  Thus, mother must have allele O. So mother's genotype is AO.

A mother with AO genotype will pass to her son either A or O allele. Since son is type B negative, it could inherit from mother only O allele. Son's genotype is BO. This means that he inherited from the father B allele.

Talking of Rh, her son is type B negative. A negative Rh phenotype contains both recessive alleles r.
Therefore, the son genotype is BOrr.
In terms of the alleles for the I locus, it can be represented as I^(B)i.

Explanation:

Binomial nomenclature, which is used in biology for the scientific naming of organisms, uses two Latin words. These words are formed from Latin or Greek roots, regardless of the language spoken by the scientist.

The first word represents the genus, and the second word, the species. For example, the human species is scientifically named Homo sapiens, where 'Homo' is the genus, and 'sapiens' is the species.
