At Billy's preschool, they have a total of 25 bicycles and tricycles. Among them all, there are 57 wheels. How many of each are there?
Answers
Answer 1
Answer:
let x be the number of bicycles and y the number of tricycles. x+y=25 (1) and 2x+3y=57 (2). Multiplying (1) by 2, you have 2x+2y=50. Doing (2)-(1) gives y=7. Therefore, x=25-7=18. There are 18 bicycles and 7 tricycles.
Which of the following pairs of fractions are like fractions?a. 1/2 and 4/8 b. 7/9 and 8/9 c. 5/11 and 15/33 d. 4/3 and 3/4
Answers
A 1/2 and 4/8 because to make them both have same denominator you multiply 1/2 by 2 and get 4/8 or you can do it the easy way and simpliphy 4/8 to 1/2. 4 is half of 8 so there for it would be 1/2.
Gabriel is making a mixture of compost and soil to use for a special plant. He wants his final mix to be 2 parts compost and 8 parts soil. He wants to end up with 12 kilograms to mix. How many kilograms of compost should Gabriel use?
Answers
I thought about it this way; the ratio between compost and soil is 2/8. 2/8 is also equal to 1/4, and 1/4 of 12 is 3. So you'd want 3 kilograms of compost a d 9kg of soil. (:
about 0.9 i think. i may be wrong so dont take my word for it
an elevator weighing 6,000 newton move up a distance of 10 meters in 30 seconds.what was the power of the elevators motor in watt and and in horsepower? btw: the part im having trouble with is getting the horse power
Answers
Energy added to the elevator (work) = (6,000 N) x (10 meters) = 60,000 joules.
Now, here comes the part you've been waiting for: The "horsepower".
We won't go through the history of 'horsepower', where it came from etc. All you need to know is how it relates to 'watts'.
Here's that answer: 1 horsepower = 746 watts .
So the power of your elevator motor was
(2000 watts) x (1 HP / 746 watts) = 2.681 horsepower (rounded)
Obviously, that unit has nothing to do with real horses, if it ever did. It's just another name for 746 watts.
Now I WILL tell you how to remember that number ... because it's such a gas. This story is not true either. But I bet you'll remember it, for a while anyway:
From the detailed entries in Christopher Columbus' log during his first voyage to the New World, modern scientists have been able to calculate that when running before a wind of 30 mph, the main sail of the Nina, the Pinta, or the Santa Maria would have developed almost exactly 2.0 horsepower.
Columbus discovered America in 1492 .
So each sailing horsepower on that voyage corresponded to
1492 / 2 = 746 watts.
Sorry about that. The devil makes me do it whenever the subject comes up.
